Rex, named for his innate aptitude for espionage and control, is a very sweet German Shepherd. He was adopted by Giovanni and Barbara, fictitious names, my patients, because he was far too lively to live with his old owner: an elderly lady.
Rex had been a gift from the grandchildren to their grandmother in an attempt to soothe her loneliness and keep her company, but his particularly exuberant temperament had made him a destabilizing life partner. Rex loved to play, jumping off the balcony to chase a cat, a ball or the postman.
The grandchildren, deeply concerned for their grandmother’s safety, reluctantly decided to give him up for adoption.

Rex
The first name of the four-legged was Charlie, in honor of the neighbor’s first great love, but when he was adopted by my patients, they immediately renamed him Rex. It was a short name, easy to listen to – given its vivacity and resourcefulness – and it was reminiscent of the great Rex, the police dog.
The four-legged was a large German Shepherd. He had a lion’s head, surrounded by such thick hair that it resembled a lion’s mane.
The coat was nut brown with copper tints. Her large, deep-set eyes were dark and alert, full of awe and wonder, with reflections like the water of a river. When she paused to look at you, her gaze was flooded with a contagious and disarming sweetness.
Rex has always been very loyal with a keen aptitude for standing up for his family members.
Since he was a puppy, he had shown a natural propensity for espionage, for getting intoxicated with scents during his olfactory walks, for following trails until he found a lost ball and brought it back to a crying child.
Once, on a walk with his family, Rex helped a broken mother who could no longer find her baby.
In reality, the little boy had left on his bicycle and could no longer find his way back.
Rex, without anyone explaining it to him, smelled the child’s backpack and then found it after only ten minutes.

Andrea and Rex, a special relationship
Andrea, real name, and son of Barbara and Giovanni, was only four years old when Rex became part of her life. They were both puppies. The baby and the four-legged bonded deeply and started doing everything together. Breakfast with the theft of snacks, ball games in the garden and role-playing games: Andrea was the policeman and Rex the police dog.
They hid objects around the house and Rex found them, followed by a lavish and enjoyable reward.
They played espionage and followed imaginary leads in the parks to improve Rex’s sense of smell more and more. Even if the training was completely amateurish, Rex got better and better and Andrea more and more satisfied with his role.
He probably would have been a police dog in another life

Rex loves to sniff out tracks
One Saturday afternoon, apparently like other Saturdays, Rex starts wandering around the house, more restless than ever. Barbara thought she wanted to play as always. When at one point, he starts barking and takes my patient to a cabinet in the office that was supposed to contain only documents. Rex stopped in front of the wardrobe, started barking non-stop attracting everyone’s attention and found Giovanni’s second cell phone.
Unfortunately, the investigated cell phone contained a second SIM and a second life for Giovanni.
