The Denomination of Origin Protegida de l’Oli de l’Empordà presented the new harvest this Saturday in Girona. Throughout the morning, outside the Mercat del Lleó, a space was set up to promote the new oil from l’Empordà, where it was also possible to taste and purchase the oil directly from the producers of the DOP

A “quality” harvest

The president of the DOP Oli de l’Empordà, Simón Casanovas explains that “a very high-quality harvest is expected”. However, he adds that the production “it will be reduced by nearly 50% compared to last year, due to the effects of the drought, which has caused few olives to be made. We estimate that we will produce around 150,000 litres, from a harvest that started at the beginning of November. We don’t remember that we’ve ever had three years of drought in a row,” laments the president.

The new harvest is sponsored by the gastronomic group Girona Bons Fogons. For this reason, as part of the presentation of the oil harvest, the gastronomic collective Girona Bons Fogons has presented the 15th Rice Days that will take place from December 16 to 31. To publicize this campaign, a taste of rice was cooked and distributed to everyone who came to the event.

Girona Bons Fogons explains that the purpose of the conference is “to make Pals rice known, as a local product and its importance in Girona cuisine”. Bons Fogons wants to publicize Girona’s traditional recipe based on native products and also on those that arrive daily at the city’s markets. Each restaurant will make a personal and unique rice according to its type of cuisine.

The extra virgin olive oil of the Protected Designation of Origin Oli de l’Empordà is an oil made from the three autochthonous and exclusive varieties of the DOP area (argudell, curivell and llei de Cadaqués) and a traditional variety (arbequina) that has been cultivated in the area since the 18th century. The Argudell variety is the majority and the one that gives personality to the oil. Therefore, its presence must be the majority in the oils produced within the DOP, with a minimum percentage of 51%. Currently around 900 hectares are attached to the denomination.
