In January, the Earth will be as close as possible to the Sun, the diameter of the star will appear larger

In early January, the Earth will reach its closest point to the Sun in its orbit, resulting in the Sun’s largest apparent diameter that year.

According to the press service of the Moscow Planetarium, the solar disk will look 3% larger than at the beginning of July. The distance between the planets will be 147,098,988 km, which is the closest distance this year.

The Earth moves in an elliptical orbit at a speed of 29.765 km/sec and makes a complete circle around the Sun in 365 days 6 hours 9 minutes 10 seconds. Perihelion, the point in the orbit closest to the Sun, occurs in January, and aphelion, the farthest point in the orbit, is reached in early July. The difference in the diameter of the Sun between these points is imperceptible to the eye, but a comparison shows that in January the solar disk looks 3% larger.
