Perihelion, the point in the orbit closest to the Sun, occurs in January, and aphelion, the farthest point in the orbit, is reached in early July. The difference in the diameter of the Sun between these points is imperceptible to the eye, but a comparison shows that in January the solar disk looks 3% larger.
