The activities of the training workshop “on exchanging experiences and enhancing the capabilities of members of the public prosecution in judicial response to crimes related to electoral disputes” were opened, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme.

The workshop witnessed the presence of Abu Bakr Marada, a member of the Board of the High National Elections Commission, Al-Sadiq Al-Zakar, Director of the Commission’s Field Operations Department, and Abdel Baset Al-Nafati, Head of the Commission’s Training and Procedures Department, in addition to Dr. Khalifa Ashour, a representative of the Office of the Attorney General.

In his opening speech, Abu Bakr Marada expressed his deep thanks for the attendance and participation, stressing “the importance of this workshop, which will provide members of the Public Prosecution with the opportunity to learn about the legal framework for electoral disputes and the nature of these disputes.”

He stressed “the role of the judiciary as an essential partner in ensuring the integrity and impartiality of the electoral process, noting that the role of the judiciary enhances the correct application of the law by adjudicating electoral appeals and crimes committed against the electoral process.”

On the first day of the workshop, participants discussed international standards for free and fair elections, electoral systems, in addition to the legal framework for electoral disputes. A practical simulation of polling day was also presented, in addition to highlighting the characteristics of electoral disputes, the crimes associated with them, and their exceptional procedures.”

The three-day workshop comes “as part of the joint efforts between the Commission and the Attorney General’s Office to enhance the efficiency of public prosecutors in confronting the legal challenges facing the electoral process, especially in municipal council elections.”
