The member states of the European Union have adopted this Tuesday a new regulation with which to increase the demand and the consistent use of renewable fuels in the maritime transport sector.

The regulation proposes measures to ensure that the intensity of greenhouse gases in maritime fuel is gradually reduced from 2% in 2025 to 80% in 2050, as well as incentives for the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin and the exclusion of fossil fuels from certification processes.

It also establishes the obligation for passenger ships and containers to use the land electricity grid for all their electricity needs while they are berthed at the docks of the main EU ports from 2030, with a view to mitigating air pollution in ports.

The regulations contemplate temporary exceptions for outermost regions, small islands and areas economically highly dependent on their connectivity and that the penalties for the application of the regulation are used for projects to support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. The new rules will apply from January 1, 2025, except for some articles that come into force on August 31, 2024.

The agreement comes under the Spanish presidency of the Council. In this sense, the Minister for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, has assessed that the new law will provide legal certainty to ship operators and fuel producers and “will help launch large-scale production of sustainable maritime fuels”, in a step that is in line with meeting climate objectives “on a European and global scale”.
