The European Union’s (EU) arms stockpiles are depleted, and the union’s countries should consider a common loan to develop the defense industrial complex. This was stated by the head of the EU foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, in his blog on the website of the European External Action Service, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

“Existing arms stockpiles are depleted and the conflict has evolved from a war of stocks into a war of production,” Borrell said.

The head of European diplomacy also said that the EU’s defense industry provides about 40 percent of its own defense needs, meaning the union imports most of the weapons and equipment it uses. According to Borrell, due to the depletion of reserves over the past two years, the union countries have made 78 percent of their defense purchases outside the EU.

Borrell also said that a joint loan was being discussed among EU states “to support the efforts needed to invest in pan-European defense capabilities and defense industry.” He called on European countries to consider this decision, explaining that “Russia threatens our security [стран ЕС]and we urgently need to increase our defense capabilities and develop the defense industry.”
