The European Commission said it had approved 6.9 billion euros ($7.4 billion) in state aid for infrastructure projects to boost supplies of “green” hydrogen, Reuters reported.

The aid, which will be provided by seven EU countries, is expected to unlock an additional €5.4 billion in private investment, with 32 companies involved in 33 renewable hydrogen projects, the EC said.

The projects will support the deployment of large-scale electrolysers for the production of renewable hydrogen and pipelines to transport it.

They will also help develop large-scale hydrogen storage facilities and build processing terminals and port infrastructure to handle liquefied hydrogen supplies.

“This will create the first regional infrastructure clusters in several member states and pave the way for future interconnections across Europe, in line with the European Hydrogen Strategy,” said EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.

The approval of the aid provided by France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Slovakia marks the beginning of the third so-called “important project of common European interest” focused on hydrogen, BTA reported.
