Hand luggage is essential, but it often causes a lot of headaches for travelers: luggage sizes, how many suitcases I can take as hand luggage, and what I can and can’t put in them. The truth is that it is a bit chaotic: look for a suitcase with the sizes requested by the company and what objects I can add to it or look at the milliliters I can carry. If there are products we cannot carry, the sizes are larger or the weight is higher, we will have to pay an extra fee for power invoice-the and, depending on what the problem is, we will not be able to carry it as a hand bag (luggage) and will have to carry it as extra baggage, separating ourselves from our belongings.

How to avoid surprises at the airport

It is important to take a look at the baggage policy of the company with which we will travel because each of them has different regulations. We will find out there the prices for the extras and what goes into ‘hand luggage’.

Do you want to travel but don’t have anyone to do it with?

The proposals that are being carried out to solve the issue of hand luggage

The European Union is aware of the problems with the various regulations on luggage and, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has scored some standard dimensions for cabin hand luggage, 55x35x20 cm, although, only it is a proposal which they have done and currently there is no standard size accepted by all airlines.

So, as there is no obligation to the sizeseach airline can do what they see fit, forcing their passengers to make an extra payment, if our suitcases exceed the sizes they have as standard or weigh more, having to check them.

At the beginning of this October, the European Parliament approved by majority vote a non-binding resolution, to standardize hand luggage dimensions that can be taken on the main and ‘low cost’ airlines: RyanairVueling i EasyJet, among others.

This resolution iss by airlines operating in the European Union and aims to end extra payments and surprise billings because it weighs more or exceeds the sizes established by the company. The European Parliament wants to make hand luggage free. Standardizing the sizes will give passengers clearer options apart from guaranteeing hand luggage as indispensable, as defined by European justice towards cabin baggage in the 2014 ruling, without having to make an extra expense for him.

The Parliament is of the opinion that the criterion used by the airlines to charge extra for hand luggage is an abusive and unfair practice.

Although, the resolution approved by the majority at the beginning of October, by the European Parliament, as it is not binding, it does not oblige the companies to carry it out, so for the time being they will continue with whatever hand luggage policies they want. But, putting pressure on the part of the European Union is already a first step to be able to change these policies.

The Airline Association (ALA) has decided to respond to the barrage of criticism and the resolution of the European Parliament, making it clear that the collection of cabin baggage is perfectly legal and is protected by European Regulation 1008/2008, which establishes the freedom of tariff fixing.
