The European Space Agency has released a five-minute audio clip of Earth’s magnetic signals that have been measured by satellites and converted into sounds.

Researchers from the Technical University of Denmark picked up magnetic signals, which were measured by the European Space Agency’s magnetic field-scanning mission Swarm, and converted them into sounds that could be heard by humans.

The audio clip includes strange squeaks and crackling sounds, as well as sounds resembling deep breathing, which listeners on social media have described as “terrifying”.

Earth’s magnetosphere generates a comet-shaped field around the planet’s surface that provides protection from solar radiation and harmful cosmic particles, as well as the erosion of the atmosphere by solar winds, according to NASA.
