Archaeologists from Tel Aviv University have suggested that the disappearance of large animal species was one of the reasons why ancient people became smarter.

Scientists noticed that more than a million years ago, the average weight of human prey was measured in tons, and 20 thousand years ago – in tens of kilograms. Thus, people had to hunt increasingly smaller and more mobile animals.

Relatively inconspicuous and nimble prey forced the ancient representatives of humanity to invent more and more advanced weapons and learn new ways of interaction.

There is a popular assumption among scientists that one of the reasons for the extermination of large animals was people and their increasingly sophisticated methods of hunting. Israeli scientists, who published their work in the journal Quaternary, suggested that there was also a reverse cause-and-effect relationship.
