Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders announced on Thursday his failure to form a government coalition in which he would assume the position of prime minister, in an admission that comes four months after his surprise victory in the legislative elections.
“I cannot become prime minister unless you support me,” Wilders said in a post on the X platform all Parties in the coalition. “This is not the case.”
Wilders’ announcement came at a time when Dutch media reported a breakthrough that could lead to the formation of a technocratic government that Wilders cannot head.
According to the supervisor of the ongoing negotiations to form a government coalition, the political parties expressed their willingness to take the “next step” after holding “good” and “intensive” discussions on Monday and Tuesday.
Wilders has always stressed his desire to lead the country after his major electoral victory.
But the far-right leader’s hopes of becoming prime minister were shattered on the rocks of political negotiations.
The leader of the Freedom Party said, “My love for my country and my voters is great and more important than my position.”
Wilders stressed that he wants “a right-wing government, and less asylum and immigration. The Dutch first.”
The form of the technocratic government that will be formed has not yet been determined, but this means that the leaders of the parties participating in the negotiations, including Wilders, will not be able to join it.
According to Dutch media, the parties involved in the negotiations can appoint their representatives in the expected technocratic government.
These ministers can be partisans in the broad sense of the word or be from outside the political club, according to the same source.
According to the public NOS television channel, Wilders remaining head of his party’s parliamentary bloc will enable him to remain “free” in his words and actions without being obligated to do so by the rest of the parties in the coalition.
