The 5th EMAK has specially trained personnel and equipment to deal with a chemical, nuclear or biological attack, as demonstrated by the unprecedented incident of throwing a chemical substance, probably mercury, on the steps of a house in the East.

The chemical substance, the composition of which will be determined after appropriate analyses, could potentially turn out to be dangerous, which fortunately did not happen in this particular case.
However, the state apparatus was mobilized immediately after being informed by a citizen that someone had probably dumped potentially dangerous chemicals. The Fire Department intervened with a special chemical collection fire truck from the 5th EMAK, which has specially trained personnel and equipment to deal with chemical, nuclear or biological threats, as reported by the Epirus-West Operations Coordinator. of Macedonia and the Islands, Lieutenant General Christoforos Bokas.
“The mission of the Fire Department is to protect the life and property of citizens from any danger,” said Mr. Bokas, assuring the readiness of the unit if needed.

Preparation in view of fire fighting

Mr. Bokas, after assuming his duties, had a series of contacts with the representatives of the local authorities and made visits to the fire services of the Region, expressing the assurance that the fire season will start smoothly.
At the same time, he reminded the citizens that it is forbidden to burn branches without observing the prescribed fire safety measures (such as sufficient water nearby), throughout the year, not only during the fire season. In fact, according to the relevant provision, strict fines are imposed, which have also been imposed in our region.
“The aim is not the fines and this is also the direction of the ministry”, noted Mr. Bokas, pointing out, however, that everyone should be especially careful and observe the measures, which can be informed by the Fire Service .
