Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdolakhian said in a telephone conversation today that an escalation of the situation and new provocative actions could increase tensions in the Middle East, Reuters reported, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“As noted, further escalation of the situation in the region and new dangerous provocative actions could lead to an increase in tensions in the Middle East. Preventing such scenarios and eliminating their root causes should become the subject of special, priority attention by the Council for UN security,” said a statement from the ministry, quoted by TASS.
The agency notes that in the conversation the two sides reaffirmed their positions in support of an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, solving the most acute humanitarian problems and creating permanent conditions for direct negotiations in accordance with UN resolutions to resolve the Palestinian- the Israeli conflict through the creation of two states.
The ministry’s announcement also states that Abdolakhian informed Lavrov about the measures taken by Tehran “in response to the April 1 Israeli airstrike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, as a result of which Iranian officials were killed,” BTA reports. .
