The former defense minister on the gas agreement with Lebanon: “The story is not what is being told”

by time news

The agreement between Israel and Lebanon on the issue of the maritime border continues to cause an uproar in the political system, even though it has not yet been officially signed. Among the reactions to the issue, one can find a sharp confrontation between Prime Minister Yair Lapid and opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu, who announced that “if this illegal kidnapper passes, he will not oblige us.”

The former Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, addressed the storm this morning (Tuesday) in an interview in Kan B, saying: “The decision to reach a compromise with Lebanon is correct, it is a good agreement. There is no certainty that if they had continued the negotiations, we would have ended up with more gas.”

“The whole story is not what we are told,” he explained, “the real story here is with the Americans, who are leading a global effort to prevent Europe from freezing this winter and thus giving up backing for Ukraine.” He noted: There have already been explosions in the gas pipelines that feed Europe. The United States is investing a lot of effort to reach everyone who produces gas in the world, to increase the supply and make gas that does not come from Russia reach Europe.”

“The Kana Zidon field, which is on the Lebanese side, will never be drilled or explored – no one knows what is there,” Barak pointed out. “On the other hand, at Asda Harish, the energy production process needs to begin, and the Americans demand this from Israel, and rightly so. They give us three million dollars a year, veto any decision against us in the United Nations, and today – they are the ones asking for help. The agreement needs to be concluded, otherwise everything is at risk of a conflict that will cause the Americans to get involved in Ukraine again.”

He concluded: “In this sense, the Israeli government’s decision to go towards America and find a way to reach a compromise in the long-standing conflict, is a right decision and it is good that it was made. Essentially, it is a response to a justified American appeal.”
