Sebastián Piñera, former president of Chile, died at the age of 74 in a plane crash in Lake Ranco, about 900 kilometers south of Santiago. Piñera himself was piloting the helicopter that crashed near his house, located in Bahia Coique. The former president, with significant experience as a pilot, was traveling with three other people who were injured.

According to friends who were in Lago Ranco, the former president was spending a few days on vacation with his wife Cecilia Morel and some of his four children and nine grandchildren.

The death information has been confirmed by his office. Piñera, twice president (2010-2014 and 2018-2022), was the first right-wing president to come to power by popular election after the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

The Government of leftist President Gabriel Boric, who succeeded Piñera in power since March 2022, deeply regretted this death. “He will have all the republican honors and recognitions he deserves. President Boric has instructed that a state funeral be held and that national mourning be declared,” said Interior Minister Carolina Tohá, from the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago.
