The French Ministry of Defense has denied the information contained in one of the leaked documents about military operations in Ukraine, that it has its soldiers in the attacked country. Politico reported about it today. Documents attributed to the Pentagon have been circulating on social media for several days. According to Kiev, they contain fictitious data and according to military analysts, they may have been modified for disinformation purposes.
“French forces are not involved in operations in Ukraine,” Le Monde newspaper quotes the response of French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s colleagues. “We do not comment on documents whose provenance is uncertain,” added the minister’s team.
According to The Guardian, one of the documents states that small contingents of special forces from NATO countries are moving in Ukraine. In addition to France, these claims include the USA, Britain and Latvia.
It is unclear how the documents got onto social media, but they were widely circulated by pro-Russian government channels. According to Ukrainian officials, the documents contain “a huge amount of fabricated information.” Military analysts believe some of the documents have been redacted, but some files appear to be authentic.
Documents and posts on the Internet can be selectively edited to present Kremlin disinformation, experts believe. In one of the posts, for example, it is stated that 16,000 to 17,500 Russian soldiers died during the invasion. But the Pentagon and other analysts actually estimate that Russia lost up to 200,000 soldiers.
