France against Germany, North against South: The EU is fighting over how much debt the countries can take on. And now?
Valdis Dombrovskis, the Vice-President of the EU Commission who is otherwise rarely colorful, spoke of the “camino fiscal”, the fiscal Way of St. James that the EU must now embark on. The incumbent EU Council President, Spain’s Economy and Finance Minister Nadia Calviño, announced that under her leadership the EU would now move forward in the “Santiago way”.
The laborious metaphors at the informal EU finance ministers’ meeting at the weekend in Santiago de Compostela referred to the same fact: that the dispute over the new EU budget rules, which has been going on for years and was originally supposed to be resolved in Galicia, is still stuck – and the EU with it finds itself in ever greater time constraints.
