The project of the Asturian company Exiom and the energy company Iberdrola to manufacture photovoltaic solar panels in the old Vesuvius facilities, in Riaño (Langreo) is gaining speed with the arrival of the first equipment for the production of photovoltaic modules. The project was announced in February with the commitment to start production this year after an investment of 20 million euros and the creation of 115 jobs. The plant will have a manufacturing capacity of 500 megawatts of photovoltaic panels per year.

This week the first equipment destined for the production of photovoltaic modules was unloaded. This is the first batch of specialized machinery, composed mostly of laminators, necessary in one of the main processes of manufacturing this type of products, Ibedrola reported.

At the same time, work continues inside the plant to refurbish the factory’s infrastructure – originally intended to produce refractory material for the steel industry – to adapt it to its new activity.

The factory will become the first large photovoltaic module plant in the country and one of the pioneers in Europe, according to its promoters. The intention of Iberdrola and Exiom is to contribute with this initiative to attract part of the value chain linked to renewable energies to Spain.

Iberdrola contributes with this project to compensate for the recent closure of its coal-fired Lada (Langreo) thermal power plant. Exiom, which is based in Asturias, has two solar panel production centers in China and two steel structure factories for photovoltaic parks in Langreo and France. Last year, Exiom had a turnover of more than 200 million.
