For a good period of my life, back in the 1990s when the money in my pocket seemed to have more value, I stayed with my family in an old hotel on Arroio Teixeira beach. Family atmosphere and what I liked most, complete package: breakfast, lunch and dinner included in the daily rate; in the new year there was still an extra supper, at New Year’s Eve, complete with whole roasted suckling pig. Father, mother and their children managed the place and a legion of guests from the land of those good people: Santa Cruz do Sul. We were one of the few who had no connection with the tobacco crops there.
I arrived early in the morning, before the room even opened for the hungry, the appeal was for those who could leaf through the newspapers first. My older boy, sick with Internacional, had to wake up early just to look for new information about Colorado’s signings and respond to provocations from Gilberto, a funny guy from the good land of Vera Cruz; The shame is that he was a big fan of his rival, hence the provocations.
