Six major scientific organizations in Europe, known as from G6 of the Ciencia, have published a common manifesto on the priorities they consider necessary to include in the design of the next EU framework program on research and innovation. The manifesto reflects the result of a high-level dialogue that the G6 organized at Ringberg Castle, in Bavaria (Germany), on April 17-19. The G6 invited representatives of the national governments of France, Germany, Italy and Spain, and the European Commission, as well as science experts, to discuss the future of European research, and strategic directions for the next framework program for The EU.

In the context of a wide range of geopolitical, socioeconomic, and environmental challenges, the manifesto affirms the crucial role of basic research and excellent science to lead Europe towards sustainable development and innovation.

In the face of increasingly fierce global competition, high ambition is needed to shape a strong and cohesive European Research Area, with enhanced capabilities to respond to crises and to achieve technological sovereignty.

The G6 calls for efficient and innovative ways to collaborate with international partners –with particular attention to the UK and Switzerland as indispensable flagships– and to undertake the fundamental energy transition on a large scale.

Underlining the relevance of excellent science and disruptive innovation, as well as research-informed public policies, the G6 also calls for improved coordination of financing mechanisms EU and national governments to develop the research infrastructure ecosystem in a sustainable and future-oriented way.

Taken together, these objectives should be reflected in an ambitious and crisis-proof European research and innovation budget that provides balanced support for both frontier research and applied science.

The G6 network brings together six major European and multidisciplinary Research Organizations with a total annual budget of 15.6 billion euros and more than 140,000 employees: the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, the Center National de la Recherche Scientifique, the Higher Council for Scientific Research, the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.
