Exactly one year after the presidential elections in Belarus an extraordinary solidarity relay starts today, Monday 9 August: Marisa Laurito, Sergio Rubini, Fabrizio Gifuni, Giorgia Cardaci, Francesco Bolo Rossinie Stefano Scherini, read together the heartfelt and significant letter of the Belarusian political prisoner Siarhei Verashchahin in response to activist Ilya Mironov in the spot “Gagged for #StandWithBelarus”. An intense video, conceived and directed by the journalist and spokesperson for Articolo21 Campania, Dsire Klain, previewed on the website www.Imbavagliati.it., With testimonies and photos of the complaint from the field, to raise awareness among governments on the dramatic situation in Belarus, which promotes the international campaign of the same name, wanted by FIDU and the Belarusian Association in Italy “Supolka”, for the adoption of Belarusian political prisoners by sending support letters to prison and telling their stories on their social networks.

The festival

“Imbavagliati per #StandWithBelarus”, produced by “Imbavagliati – International Festival of Civil Journalism” and with the editing and creative contribution of Matteo Antonelli, created together with the “Supolka” Association and with the contribution of the Italian Federation for Rights of the National Federation of the Press, of the Usigrai, of Articolo21 and of UNITA – National Union of Theater and Audiovisual Interpreters, makes use of the testimonies of Giuseppe Giulietti (president of the FNSI), Mirella La Magna (co-founder of GRIDAS), Kathryn Weir ( director of the Madre Museum), Fatou Diaku (president of Hamef and Articolo21 Campania) and the young Francesca Toscano and Martina Orefice. The site, currently supporting the International Festival of Civil Journalism from September, will become a real magazine, which, like the event, will give a voice to those journalists who in their countries have experienced the gag of censorship and the persecution of dictatorial regimes, but despite this has put their lives in danger to be able to speak, tell, report. The Mehari by Giancarlo Siani, the Neapolitan journalist murdered by the Camorra in 1985 with the slogan “Who forgets becomes the guilty” are the symbols of the project for freedom of the press, which has been taking place since 2015 at the Palazzo delle Arti in Naples (Pan), l where the machine / symbol is kept in “The Memory Room”, in honor of all the victims of crime. “With ‘Imbavagliati’ we try, through a cinematographic language, to make important issues of humanitarian emergency become ‘popular’ with the creation of commercials with a great emotional impact – says Dsire Klain, director of the film and artistic director of ‘Imbavagliati’ – I thank the artists and testimonials for their incredible solidarity and for having believed in this project. The Festival in September will become a newspaper, which will give voice, on the website www.imbavagliati.it, to those brave reporters, activists who are threatened or who live under guard. A project, which starting from Naples, will try to be a reference point for press freedom and human rights, telling difficult realities from an internal point of view, with the contribution of the head of international relations Eva Serio and the journalist, expert in censorship, Marco Cesario “.

The spot

The video wants to shed a light on what has been happening since 9 August 2020 in Belarus, since the Belarusian authorities announced that Aleksandr Lukashenko had been re-elected president for the sixth consecutive term. From the first peaceful protests the toll to date of 37,000 arrests, 4,600 cases of torture, as well as 608 political prisoners, 3,000 politically motivated criminal proceedings and at least four deaths. In particular, the spot tells the story of Siarhei Verashchahin through his letter. A political prisoner, sentenced to five years in prison for shouting from the window of his home at the police officers, who were carrying out the arrests with the use of ferocious violence on August 12, 2020 in Homel. For this simple gesture of protest he was brutally beaten in turn: at the hospital he was diagnosed with a closed head injury, bruising of the brain, multiple bruises and bruises to various parts of the body, including the chest, cervical, thoracic and lumbar part of the spine, temples. Her health conditions are deteriorating, but the authorities have not provided adequate medical assistance, despite thousands of signatures under the petition of citizens who asked for them.
