Georgians Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava created a surprise by taking the lead at the European Skating Championships after the pairs short program on Wednesday in Kaunas (Lithuania).
Metelkina and Berulava, who are playing their first season at the senior level, collected 71.3 points. They are ahead of the young Germans Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin (69.63 pts), winners of the Grand Prix final last December.
Before the free program scheduled for Friday, third place is occupied by the Italians Lucrezia Beccari and Matteo Guarise (67.05 pts). Penalized by numerous errors, the reigning European champions, the Italians Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii, are only seventh with 61.52 points.
On the French side, Océane Piegad and Denys Strekalin occupy ninth place (54.06 pts), while Camille and Pavel Kovalev, three-time reigning French champions, are in fifteenth position (50.90 pts).
