Munich The Stockdorf family business has close connections to China. Webasto is the world market leader for glass panoramic roofs, which Chinese customers order particularly frequently. In the People’s Republic alone, Webasto has production in almost a dozen plants. In addition to BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen, the buyers are increasingly also Chinese manufacturers.
“The Chinese plants,” says CEO Holger Engelmann to the Handelsblatt, “are among the most efficient in the group.” Webasto delivers what the market wants: the roofs glow pink and purple, and at the push of a button they show an artificial starry sky.
At the IAA in Munich, the Webasto stand is right next to that of the Chinese electric car market leader BYD. With all due respect for the achievements of the Chinese, the Webasto boss believes that a selection process among the Chinese brands will soon begin. “In the end there will be two or three who win the race. “We will see these manufacturers on the global market in the long term,” says Engelmann.
