THE Gleaner. IT WILL BE ANOTHER YEAR

The Princess of Asturias Prize for the Arts continues not to recognize any Spanish visual artist, architect or filmmaker.

The slowness of this institution is enormous. In 2018 we criticized the discriminatory and sexist composition of the jury and after having achieved parity last year, in this XLIV edition they were in the majority in that parity.

Furthermore, after more than a decade of complaints, including before the Ombudsman, in 2021 we managed to make Marina Abramovic the first international visual artist. I say “we have achieved” because these small symbolic achievements have a real impact for women in an equal society and are therefore difficult to reverse. Abramovic is joined this year by Iranian director Marjane Satrap, author of Persepolisin the Communication and Humanistic Studies Award.

Perhaps, to compensate for the negligence of Spanish visual artists, this year the photographer Cristina de Middel, as president of the Magnum agency, collects the Concordia Prize. But it’s not the same thing.

All right. We will continue to insist.
