The fact that today’s internal political developments in Armenia are another uncalculated manifestation of the government’s ambitions is probably undeniable. The consequences of this will be much greater in the background of the existing economic crisis of the coronavirus on the entire economy, moreover, from the point of view of both internal and external economic relations, Lilia Amirkhanyan, an expert of the “Hayatsk” analytical center, said in a conversation with Aysor.am.

According to him, the fact that the economy reacts negatively to any political instability can be seen regularly in the world. “It is enough for the leader of any superpower to come up with one political assessment, one hint, and there are sharp fluctuations in the quotations of the stock exchanges. This is just proof that financial markets are very sensitive to such events. Let alone such serious upheavals, that too for such a small economy as Armenia, where, one might say, everyone knows everyone.”

“I think it will not be news that political instability creates a similar situation in the economy. The most recent example of this for us was 2018, when we had a two percent drop in economic growth for the year, capital outflows. And this is despite the fact that only the government changed in Armenia. the economy was not negatively affected by other factors, no systemic and infrastructural changes followed the spring events. Meanwhile, the political campaign against the “Prosperous Armenia” party began under conditions when the economy is in a real crisis,” said Amirkhanyan.

Lilia Amirkhanyan reminded that in this case we have another feature. “We are talking not only about a political entity, but about a large businessman, and all this, like it or not, contains direct impulses towards the business community.”

According to him, all this will also negatively affect the investment attractiveness of Armenia, which is already in a bad state, because organizations that work with foreign capital have also entered into political and legal processes.

“The situation is more disturbing considering the economic crisis consequences of the coronavirus that threatens us. It is obvious that we should forget about economic development at the same time. Considering the fact that we have a government that is ready to realize its own political goals at any cost, the latter, in turn, should say goodbye to the term “economic revolution”, Amirkhanyan concluded.
