“I’m not sure where you get that we ‘rebooted’ Gal,” Gunn wrote on the network in response to claims that Gadot and Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, have finished their roles at DC.
As you remember, DC’s cinematic universe went through a big shakeup after the series of the franchise, and the fatal reviews received by the last films of the network, called into question all the future projects of the studios. Now, it seems the threat is starting to materialize. It seems that now they have taken their first step – rejecting the script for “Wonder Woman 3” and removing Cavill from the role of Superman.
Last week, Jenkins, the 51-year-old director who was set to direct the third film in the hit series, put to rest rumors that the film was scrapped due to her lack of cooperation with the studios. “I’m not one to talk about private career matters, but I will not allow inaccuracies to continue. Here are the facts,” Jenkins wrote in a letter posted on Twitter. “Start a backlash that ‘Wonder Woman 3’ didn’t happen, a false story designed to attract clickbait and that it was me who killed the movie or didn’t cooperate. That’s just not true. I never walked away.”
While stating that she was not the one to end the film’s development, Jenkins expressed understanding towards those responsible for this decision. “I was open to consider anything they asked of me,” she continued. “It was my understanding that there was nothing I could do to move forward at this point. DC is obviously buried in the changes they need to make, so I understand that these decisions are difficult right now. I don’t want what has been a beautiful journey with Wonder Woman to end on a negative note,” added the director. “I loved it so much and I was privileged to be the person who got to make the last two Wonder Woman films. She is an amazing character. Living within and around her values makes a person a better person every day. I wish her and her legacy an amazing future, with or without me.”
Jenkins added and gave compliments to the Israeli actress: “And Gal… Gal Gadot. Where do I even begin? Gal is the greatest gift I have received in this entire journey. A beloved friend, inspiration and sister. There are no words I can use to describe how magical she is . She’s the walking embodiment of Wonder Woman in real life and a better person than the world can imagine. In all the millions of moments I’ve spent with her, I’ve never once seen less than that. She’s a gift to this world, and even more so, to me.”
If the reports are indeed true, then this will be the end of the current incarnation of the DC cinematic universe that began with great fanfare in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, who was also given the reins to develop the rest of the universe’s films, similar to Kevin Feige’s role at Marvel. But unlike Feig and Marvel – Snyder and DC did not have great successes – both critically and at the box office.
