“I remain deeply concerned that Azerbaijan may take further military action to achieve additional political gains, particularly with regard to the so-called Zangezur Corridor. I urge you to continue working with international partners and organizations to support the process of holding the Aliyev regime accountable for its actions,” Senator Cardin wrote in a letter to Blinken.
The senator also reminded about Baku’s blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, then the September 19 attack, the murders of Armenians and the forced displacement of the population. In addition, the letter mentions numerous reports of extrajudicial killings of Armenians by Azerbaijani forces, the well-documented practice of destroying Armenian cultural property in areas under Baku’s control, and attempts to erase Armenian history and culture.
The senator asks the US Secretary of State what steps have been taken or will be taken to implement “possible war crimes and other atrocities by the Aliyev regime”, to hold Azerbaijani officials accountable, to bring them before the relevant international courts and to bring them to justice in 2023. in the direction of supporting the forcibly displaced Armenians as a result of the September attack.
