The good old cheese sandwich enjoys unbroken popularity in Germany. In this country, people ate a whopping 24.6 kilograms per person in 2022. After a long day at work, many people look forward to a proper dinner, a simple filling: Gouda, the Germans’ most popular type of cheese.

But other types are also popular, such as mozzarella on pizza, parmesan on pasta or cheddar on burgers. At a fancy brunch, perhaps a cream cheese or – a little more unusual – a Roquefort. The selection of cheeses in Germany is truly remarkable, there is something for every taste. But regardless of taste: Which cheese is actually the healthiest? And which one is the unhealthiest?

Cheese: Mozzarella is the healthiest – Emmentaler is also way ahead

The news portal “Heidelberg24” has now created a ranking of the healthiest types of cheese based “on nutrient content, studies and numerous nutritional guides”. Decisive factors include the salt or sodium content and the fat content of the cheese.

The result: In first place among the healthiest types of cheese is the ever-popular mozzarella. Cottage cheese and Emmentaler follow in second and third place. Not all varieties impress with their low sodium and fat content. Mozzarella, for example, consists of 40 percent fat and is higher in calories, but has a lot of protein – according to consistent reports, over 20 grams per serving (100 grams).

Cottage cheese contains slightly less protein (13 grams), but is lower in calories and, according to “Heidelberg24”, is therefore particularly suitable for people who want to lose weight. Emmental cheese is also high in calories and slightly saltier, but contains a lot of vitamin D, proteins and potassium.

Processed cheese is the unhealthiest – bad for your heart and kidneys

In last place in the ranking is processed cheese. It is therefore particularly unhealthy for bones, blood vessels, the kidneys and the heart. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the salt in processed cheese consists of phosphates. Among other things, this increases the “risk of heart attack and stroke”.

Other varieties could also be unhealthy depending on the amount. The German Nutrition Society therefore recommends not eating more than 50 to 60 grams of cheese per day. That corresponds to one or two slices. If you stick to it, cheese can also be very healthy. According to AOK, it provides “in addition to the elementary nutrients such as protein and fat, important minerals and vitamins”.

On the other hand, the AOK also warns against excessive consumption of fatty, calorie-containing and salty cheeses. Saturated fatty acids are also a crucial factor for unhealthy cheese. They can negatively affect cholesterol levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease – just like too high a salt content.

According to AOK, very hard or long-matured cheeses such as Parmesan or Gouda tend to contain a lot of salt.

Not only since the Corona pandemic, the two regions with a beach factor have been considered the most popular domestic travel destination for Germans: the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. With a total of more than ten million tourists, the two regions together almost reached the number of annual holidaymakers to Mallorca in 2023.
