The ICRC appoints its new director general

Mr Krähenbühl has dedicated more than 30 years to humanitarian work, including 25 years in important roles at the ICRC, in different delegations and at headquarters. He is widely recognized for exercising strategic and purposeful leadership. He has deep organizational experience and dedication to the ICRC.

Mr. Krähenbühl currently holds the position of Secretary General of the ICRC Assembly; His previous position had been personal envoy of the ICRC presidency in China and head of the regional delegation for East Asia (2021-2023). In 2014, he was appointed as Commissioner-General and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Middle East Agency for Palestine Refugees (2014-2019).

His leadership positions at the ICRC include Director of Operational Activities (2002-2014) and Personal Advisor to the President of the ICRC (2000-2002). Mr. Krähenbühl also carried out several operational missions in El Salvador, Peru, Afghanistan and Bosnia and Herzegovina (1991-1998); Likewise, he was head of Operational Activities for the countries of central and southeastern Europe, based in Geneva (1998-2000). He holds a master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International Relations.

Mr. Krähenbühl will begin serving as CEO on April 1, 2024, when current CEO Robert Mardini ends his four-year term.
