The IES José Arencibia Gil de Telde was present on June 9 at the closing ceremony of the Mar con-Ciencia Project, in which 600 students of Primary and Secondary Education have participated, carrying out research work both in poster format and in modality oral presentation.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation (FECYT) and the DISA Foundation have closed the Mar con-Ciencia project, an educational project directed by Pilar García Jiménez, tenured professor at the ULPGC , which has had the participation of 600 students belonging to 20 educational centers in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Mar con-Ciencia was born with different objectives such as facilitating and stimulating the learning of microbiology contents in educational centers; accentuate and publicize the importance of continuous monitoring of our oceans and the dependence that the rest of the ecosystems have on them.

For all this, researchers from the ULPGC, creators and managers of Mar con-Ciencia, have advised registered teachers for months through face-to-face sessions, making different tools available to them, such as laboratory material, and didactic resources, in order to develop the initiative in the classroom, where they have also acted as mentors with constant monitoring.

The participants have worked guided by their teachers and presented the results of their research work, both in poster format and in oral presentation modality in two sessions held on June 9 and 13, secondary and primary respectively, where they showed the learning and the skills acquired during the experience. The organization of the project handed out diplomas to the centers and teachers involved, as well as a stereomicroscope for the center, who expressed their appreciation and highlighted this new learning methodology, which promotes teamwork, and gives students greater responsibility in their own learning.

It is worth noting the participation of researchers from the ULPGC and teachers from the Colegio Liceo Francés Internacional de Gran Canaria and the IES José Arencibia Gil. In addition, it has had the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Environmental Education and Sustainability Program.

Mar con-Ciencia is a formative experience of university transfer to other levels of education, in addition to awakening scientific vocations and raising awareness of respect for the environment.

A commitment to educational innovation that has sought to train primary, secondary and high school students in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) from the perspective of conservation of the marine environment, and with the aim that said training have a social impact of raising awareness for the care of our oceans.
