Age Has Increased, Sleep Efficiency Decreased: Samsung Conducts Sleep Health Study

In a recent sleep health study conducted by Samsung, it has been found that people around the world are experiencing a decrease in sleep quality. Analyzing the sleep habits of 716 million nights of Samsung Health users, it was discovered that the global average sleep duration has fallen from 7 hours 3 minutes to 6 hours 59 minutes. This is lower than the US National Sleep Foundation’s recommended 7 hours of sleep per day.

One of the important factors contributing to decreased sleep efficiency is the duration of waking up during the night, which has increased to 50 minutes. When calculating the actual duration of sleep and time spent in bed each night, the sleep efficiency was measured at 87.49 points. Surprisingly, men’s sleep efficiency was found to be lower than women’s. While women’s performance dropped 0.47 points, men’s dropped 0.26 points.

Another significant finding of the study is that sleep efficiency decreases with age. Those over 70 years of age experienced a decrease of 1.12 points, almost double the decrease of 0.47 points among those in their 20s. The age group least affected by decreased sleep efficiency was those in their 30s, with a decrease of just 0.25 points.

Regional differences in sleep duration were also observed. Europe and North America slept more than 7 hours on average, while other regions slept for less than 7 hours. Asia had the lowest sleep efficiency at 87.16, but the region with the biggest drop in sleep efficiency was North America, where it decreased by 0.43 points.

Dr. Jirayot Jintanadilok, a physician specializing in sleep medicine at the Sleep Medicine Clinic, Medpark Hospital, emphasized the importance of quality sleep for productivity and long-term health. Lack of sleep not only affects cognitive functions such as slow brain thinking and memory loss, but also increases the risk of mental illness, infections, heart problems, high blood pressure, weight gain, and diabetes.

The study also revealed the alarming prevalence of sleep apnea, with an estimated 1 billion people worldwide suffering from this condition. Sleep apnea greatly disrupts sleep and has negative effects on both physical and mental health.

To address these issues, the Health & Wealth Expo 2023 will feature a seminar on the “Art of Sleep” and how to achieve quality sleep. Dr. Jirayot Jintanadilok will be speaking at the event, sharing his expertise in sleep medicine. The expo, organized by the Nation Group, will take place from November 9-12, 2023, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. The event aims to promote health and well-being at every age, with discussions on various health topics and medical advancements.

In conclusion, the Samsung sleep health study highlights the global decrease in sleep quality and the importance of addressing this issue. Quality sleep is essential for overall health and productivity, and steps must be taken to improve sleep habits and educate the public about the importance of sleep hygiene.]
