Research Shows Lack of Motivation and Fatigue Hindering UK People from Adopting Healthier Lifestyles

A recent study conducted by the YouGov organization, a department of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), has revealed that people in the United Kingdom are facing significant challenges in adopting healthier lifestyles. The research aimed to determine the extent to which individuals of working age in the UK prioritize their health.

The study found that lack of motivation and fatigue were the two main obstacles preventing people from taking care of their health. A staggering 38% of respondents admitted to having a lack of motivation, while 35% stated that they were simply too tired to make lifestyle changes. Other factors included the belief that healthy food prices were too expensive (30%), not having enough time (26%), and struggling with work-life balance (25%). Additionally, 12% of the respondents stated that they did not know how to begin taking care of their health.

However, these findings are concerning considering the World Cancer Research Fund has previously estimated that 40% of all cancers can be avoided through healthier lifestyles. The WCRF recommends engaging in regular exercise such as brisk walking or biking for 150 minutes per week, running or swimming for 75 minutes per week, and incorporating body weight exercises at least twice per week.

Matt Lambert, the WCRF health information and promotion manager, expressed his concern over the busy schedules of working individuals. After a long day of work, most people want to rest and avoid any further activities due to fatigue and lack of motivation. However, the survey findings emphasized the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise in reducing the risk of cancer and other serious diseases. Failure to prioritize these aspects of a healthy lifestyle could result in a 50% chance of developing cancer at some point in life for individuals in this group.

To counter these alarming statistics, the Department of Health and Social Care UK has been dedicated to promoting a healthier lifestyle for people through its project called “Better Health – Every Mind Matters.” This initiative aims to encourage regular exercise, such as running, walking, or even boxing, to reduce anxiety and improve mental health.

The WCRF has also outlined recommendations for improving one’s lifestyle for better health. These include engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or cycling, per week, as well as 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, like running or swimming. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to engage in muscle strength training at least twice a week and reduce sedentary behavior by limiting sitting time to no more than 1-2 hours at a time.

Furthermore, it is advised to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, focus on high-fiber foods, milk, nuts, and pulses, and consume at least eight glasses of water per day.

Overall, the findings of this research highlight the need for individuals to prioritize their health and overcome the barriers of lack of motivation and fatigue. With 40% of cancers being avoidable through a healthier lifestyle, it is crucial for people in the UK to implement the WCRF’s recommendations and lead a healthier life.
