Mahidol University research has found that the sodium content in food affects bone mass formation and is linked to high blood pressure. The study, conducted by Prof. Dr. Naratthapol Charoenphan and his team at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, revealed a possible connection between consuming excessive amounts of sodium and the occurrence of osteoporosis.

Calcium is crucial for maintaining healthy bones, especially for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and the elderly. Adequate calcium intake not only strengthens bone mass but also ensures the proper formation of bones and teeth in fetuses. For older individuals, maintaining bone mass is essential. In addition to consuming calcium-rich foods, it is important to be cautious about foods that may negatively impact bone strength.

Using a synchrotron 3D X-ray machine, the researchers examined the bones of rats with hypertension caused by genetic factors or excessive sodium consumption. They found that the microstructure of these rats’ bones was more porous compared to normal rats, indicating a potential link between high sodium consumption, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. The presence of existing risk factors for high blood pressure further increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. The research findings have been published in the academic journal “Scientific Reports.”

Osteoporosis can affect both men and women, but it is more commonly a problem for women during menopause. The lack of estrogen hormones during this phase leads to the deterioration of bone mass and increases the risk of developing the disease, especially for those who have a preference for salty foods.

While excessive sodium consumption can be harmful, it is important to note that consuming the right amount of sodium, as recommended by the Ministry of Public Health, can have a positive impact on the absorption of essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which are crucial for bone tissue formation. Therefore, sodium or salty foods should not be solely blamed for bone health issues, but rather the improper consumption of these foods.

The researchers also hope to extend the study’s results to monitor chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in different age groups. Focusing on one disease may overlook potential connections with other diseases. The study aims to inspire the new generation to delve into basic science before venturing into advanced research, as a strong foundation in basic science is necessary for accurate and practical applications of research findings. For example, the researchers have already developed calcium supplements tailored for individuals with high blood pressure.

This research brings attention to the importance of both calcium and sodium consumption for bone health. Proper nutrition, along with attention to sodium intake, can contribute to maintaining bone mass and overall wellbeing.]
