National Assembly Continues ‍Impeachment of Former Judicial Council ‌President

On August 11, 2024, the Plenary‍ Session of the National Assembly decided to proceed with the impeachment proceedings ‌against Wilman Terán, former president of the Judicial Council‍ (CJ), and former‍ member​ Ruth Maribel​ Barreno. ​Despite the Oversight Committee ⁤recommending against holding ‌the ⁤trial,‌ the Plenary Assembly voted in‌ favor.

The next session⁢ of the Assembly, presided over by President Henry Kronfle, is ‍scheduled for next Tuesday, ​July 16, ‌2024.‌ The agenda includes the national anthem and the impeachment of Terán and Barreno, who are accused of obstructing justice ‍in the Judicial Independence case.

The Assembly ‍previously rejected a ⁢report by the Oversight Commission, which had recommended discontinuing⁢ the trial. This motion‌ was supported by 88 votes from the Construye, Social Christian​ Party, Pachakutik, National Democratic Action, and several independent blocs. ⁢The Citizen Revolution (RC) bench, aligned with former president Correa, ‌voted against the motion with 46 ​votes.

Both National ​Democratic⁣ Action⁢ (ADN) and ⁣the‌ Social Christian Party (PSC) have confirmed their ⁤intention to vote in favor of Terán’s censure.

Terán ⁤also faces charges in⁢ the Metástasis case, involving investigations into organized crime alongside 51 other defendants. He is currently detained at the⁢ maximum security prison, La ​Roca, despite his attempts to be transferred to Prison 4 in⁤ Quito.
