Pelé had invented everything in football, but had he already scored two magnificent goals against his side in less than ten minutes? Wout Faes did. The Leicester defender, who passed through the Stade de Reims, did not push the ball once but twice into his own net, and in circumstances that are enough to make you smile. While the Foxes had opened the scoring in the fourth minute against Liverpool thanks to a full axis breakthrough from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, the Belgian defender completely reversed the game.
First, in the 38th minute, on a harmless cross from Liverpool’s English side Trent Alexander-Arnold, the 24-year-old defender completely misses his tackle, which deflects the ball which rises in the air from Anfield, before falling in the skylight of a completely flabbergasted Danny Ward on his line. A first original “CSC”, to forget as quickly as possible for Wout Faes… Which does not mean, however, replacing it with another goal, perhaps even a little more comical.
Seven minutes later, when Liverpool and Leicester are about to return to the locker room back to back, Darwin Nunez is well launched in depth. With a small dive, the Uruguayan striker deceives the goalkeeper but the ball comes crashing into the post. This is without counting on our unfortunate hero of the evening.
Wout Faes, coming back too quickly, has no choice but to put the ball back in his own goal, wanting to clear over his own goal… Enough to sign a double, as we rarely see! The former Reims defender becomes the first Premier League player to score two own goals in the same game since Jonathan Walters, for Stoke City against Chelsea in January 2013. But in less than ten minutes, it must be a first in history !
