Mayor Riccardo Gullo told Sky News that the goats were causing “tension” in the island community by destroying the environment, breaking into people’s homes and eating their crops.

Mr. Gullo said it all started when a few goats allegedly escaped from their owner and started multiplying in such a way that they are now too difficult to control.

“They caused problems, you could meet them everywhere,” he said. – We counted 600 goats. There are too many for this small island.”

The mayor explained that the plan to offer goats to those who would like to breed them has so far been successful, with requests even coming from central Italy’s Tuscany region and northern Italy’s Lombardy, according to Sky News.

Although the offer ended on April 10, the goats continue to be offered to anyone, and there are no restrictions on who can request a goat or how many can be taken.

Gloria, the owner of a cafe in the port of Alikudi, agreed to this plan. But she questioned how it would work logistically.

She told The Guardian that there are “too many” goats, and one of them also visits her cafe. Although the goat attracted people’s attention in the beginning, Gloria was worried that it might become aggressive.

She pointed out that it can be difficult to move the goats off the mountain top of the island:

“How are they going to get the goats down?” Maybe they’ll need a helicopter to transport two or three at a time, Gloria mused. “It’s a good proposal, but there’s no logistical solution yet.”
