Azerbaijan and Armenia have made significant progress in the text of the peace treaty, but unresolved issues remain, said Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the president of Azerbaijan, in an interview with “Berliner Zeitung”.

“Azerbaijan is conscientiously negotiating with Armenia in various places to achieve the long-awaited peace in the region. We truly believe that there is a historic opportunity to conclude a peace treaty, and we must not miss this opportunity. “Significant progress has been made on the text of the peace agreement, but there are still several unresolved issues,” he said.

According to Hajiyev, “the issue of Karabakh has been completely removed from the agenda.”

“At the moment, we do not see any serious obstacles to the conclusion of a peace treaty, now we see the calmest days in the relations between the two countries in the last 30 years,” he emphasized.

Hajiyev noted that the informal meeting between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan in St. Petersburg within the framework of the CIS informal summit was also positive.

“However, it is still difficult to talk about the specific terms of signing the peace agreement, because further negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are necessary to complete the process,” he added.

Regarding the negotiation platforms, Hajiyev said that the place is not important for the Azerbaijani side. “The most important thing is the result, we are in favor of result-based negotiations, giving preference to direct negotiations. Today, the work on the text of the peace agreement is being carried out directly between Baku and Yerevan,” Aliyev’s assistant concluded.
