European intelligence services have warned their governments that the Kremlin‘s immediate plans include an attempt to destabilize the situation in the EU. According to them, Russia is plotting “acts of violence and sabotage across the continent” as it intends to set a course for a long conflict with the West.
The Financial Times writes about this, citing information from intelligence officers.
According to intelligence data, Russia “has already begun to more actively prepare secret explosions, arson and damage to infrastructure on European territory, both directly and through intermediaries.” At the same time, as the special services note, the Russians do not take into account at all how many people may die as a result of their actions.
“Although Kremlin agents have a long history of such operations and have carried out sporadic attacks in Europe in recent years, there is growing evidence of more aggressive and concerted efforts,” according to journalists from three different European countries.
In addition, the Russians intend to put pressure on Europe through disinformation, sabotage or hacker attacks.
A senior researcher at the Chatham House think tank believes that Russian activity in EU countries has indeed increased. “These targeted attacks that we’ve seen so far are of course aimed at creating unrest, but they can also be used for disinformation. And then Russia learns from these attacks if it wants to truly immobilize Europe,” he said.
