Leipzig Host City for UEFA EURO 2024
Of all the initiatives and projects for Leipzig, there was one that was brighter in 2024: Leipzig as the host city for UEFA EURO 2024. More than 308,000 visitors in the fan zone, four well-organized matches in the “Leipzig Stadium” modern and the The IBC media center at the Leipzig trade fair was very beneficial for tourism. Leipzig presented itself as an efficient and welcoming sports city that guaranteed the best conditions for teams, associations and fans. UEFA also praised the cooperation with the city management, RB Leipzig and the Leipziger Messe for the excellent organization.
Annegret Hänsel, managing director of the Unikatum Children’s Museum
In the “Personality” category, the prize was awarded to Annegret Hänsel, managing director of the A unique children’s museumthe jury.In his laudatory speech, Volker Bremer said, “The exhibition designer founded the museum in 2010 as a voluntary initiative – first on one floor, now in its own building and as the only self-reliant children’s and youth museum in East Germany. With interactive exhibitions, the museum already attracts 45,000 visitors every year, a third of them from other federal states. Hansel’s commitment created a unique cultural educational place for children and thus increased Leipzig’s tourist appeal for families. The museum also encourages visitors to participate in society.”
Other award winners
The second prize was awarded in the “Companies/Institutions” category. Support association Auwaldstation and Schlosspark Lützschena eV. The association has been active for over 20 years and combines tourism with education and culture. he actively contributes to the “revival” of the Lützschena Castle Park and is the operator of the Auwaldstation, where school classes, young people and active tourists in particular can learn about the local fauna and flora. Second place was awarded to Stefan Schedler in the personality category. With his dedicated team and his diplomacy, he contributed greatly to the success of the major UEFA EURO 2024 project in Leipzig. Whether it was the triumphant search for volunteers,the creation of the accredited center in the design offices or the Augustusplatz fan zone with an attractive stage program and more than 30 concerts – he succeeded in uniting many companies and people.
Leipzig Tourism Award
Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing (LTM) GmbH has been organizing the “Leipzig Tourism Award” every year as 2002. The honorary award is given to a company and a personality who have made a special contribution to the development of tourism in the city of Leipzig in the current year. Twelve companies and eight personalities were nominated in 2024. A jury of six city councilors and ten marketing experts from tourism, business, culture and science chose the winners from the proposals submitted by 30 October 2024.
