In a recent report by Al-Marsad Newspaper, a leading doctor has revealed the four main foods that increase the risk of stroke. Dr Jonathan Zellinger, Chief Digital GP at Babylon, explains that the majority of strokes are associated with the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries that supply the brain, known as atherosclerosis.

According to Dr Zellinger, saturated and trans fats are the main culprits that contribute to this buildup. Foods such as processed meats like sausages and burgers, butter, biscuits, and fried foods are all examples of high-fat foods that increase the risk of stroke.

Furthermore, high blood pressure also causes atherosclerosis, so consuming large amounts of salt, commonly found in potato chips, can also increase the risk of stroke. Another major factor is the high consumption of sugar, particularly in the form of soft drinks. This is partly because sugar is associated with weight gain and type 2 diabetes, both of which can cause arterial damage and inflammation.

In light of these findings, Dr Zellinger advises individuals to consume at least five portions of fruits and vegetables per day. Ideally, he recommends aiming for seven to nine portions for maximum health benefits. Fruits and vegetables are known to contain essential nutrients and antioxidants that help protect against stroke and maintain overall brain health.
