Guwahati ∙ A man dressed as Lord Shiva and performing a street play was arrested in Assam. Activist Birinji Bora was arrested by the police on Saturday following a complaint lodged by Hindu organizations Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal that he had hurt religious sentiments. He was released on bail on Sunday.

Birinji dressed as Shiva and another woman dressed as Parvati protested against the rising prices in the country. The street drama took place on Saturday afternoon on the road near Nowgong College Clock Tower Point. They also rode bikes to indicate the rise in fuel prices.

The video of this has gone viral on social media. After this, Hindu organizations filed a complaint alleging that religious sentiments were hurt. Birinchi Bora was taken into custody on Saturday evening and taken to Nagaon Sadar police station. After widespread protests, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma directly intervened.

The Chief Minister said on Twitter that performing street drama is not blasphemy and has instructed the district police to release the person who was taken into custody. Nagaon police chief Leena Dolly said Birinchi Bora was released on bail on Sunday morning. Dolly clarified that the woman who played the role of Goddess Parvati is yet to be found and Dulal Bora, who is associated with the play, has been asked to appear.
