The personal data of approximately 270 thousand British military personnel was compromised as a result of a cyber attack against the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, government sources reported this to The Times newspaper.

According to their information, we are talking about both a significant part of active military personnel and reservists and veterans. At the same time, the hackers did not gain access to the personal data of special forces military personnel, which are stored on other servers.

On Monday evening, Sky News reported that Chinese hackers allegedly carried out an attack against the UK Ministry of Defense. Payroll processing systems were hacked, allowing criminals to gain access to personal data, including bank details, defense personnel and military personnel. At the same time, it was emphasized that this database belongs to the contractor company and was not connected to the systems of the Ministry of Defense. A departmental investigation has been launched into the cyber attack.

According to The Times, British authorities believe the cyberattack was carried out by Chinese-linked hackers. However, at this stage, London does not intend to directly blame Beijing due to the lack of sufficient evidence of its involvement.

In March, British authorities reported that Chinese hackers allegedly hacked the servers of the kingdom’s Election Commission and gained access to the personal data of about 40 million voters in the country. In addition, they allegedly carried out cyberattacks against some parliamentarians, including former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith.
