The documentary “On the wrong side” by Luca Miniero recounts the reunion between the former children who survived the tunnel accident in 1983

Forty years ago they were kids on a school trip from Naples to Lake Garda. They were 13 years old. It was April 26, 1983, the bus was passing around Florence. Suddenly the driver loses control, the impact with a lorry, the bus skids and overturns. 13 students lost their lives, those sitting on the left side of the middle. It is the Melarancio tragedy, one of the most serious road accidents in Italian history, so called because of the name of the tunnel where the collision occurred. Today, forty years after that tragic event, the survivors meet for lunch in their hometown, Naples. A special reunion, bitter but full of life, told in the documentary “On the wrong side” by Luca Miniero, produced by Viola Film and Luca Miniero, presented in the Italian competition at the 64th Festival dei Popoli of Florence, the international documentary film event scheduled until November 12th. A powerful documentary.

After the initial curiosity of meeting each other, the classmates relive the school anecdotes of those years with the natural spontaneity of a group of old friends, following the thread of memories and without any forcing on the part of the director. You eat, you drink, you laugh. We understand how difficult the life of those who remain is, but we also understand how precious the life of those who are saved is. The documentary tells a dramatic event, but is incredibly full of life. During the meal, between the dining room and the terrace overlooking Naples, nostalgic and heartbreaking memories of the accident and of the classmates who are no longer with us follow one another. There are those who still feel guilty for having changed seats shortly before the accident, there are those who remember the songs that were listened to in those days, there are those who carry inside the always open wounds of ‘soul. The pages of the diaries scroll by, the class photos scroll by, the lives of the survivors intertwine with those of those who have disappeared forever.

A moving work signed by Miniero, author of several campaigns for Rai and for the major Italian companies. For cinema he has made award-winning short films (Locarno Film Festival) such as “Small things of non-quantifiable value” and “Armando’s Dream”. As a soloist, in direction and screenplay, he has signed several films for the cinema, including “Benvenuti al Sud”, nominated for 10 David di Donatello. He has recently filmed the TV film “Napoli Milionaria”, with Massimiliano Gallo which will be broadcast in December 2023 on Rai 1 and is currently busy filming the TV series “Vincenzo Malinconio 2” produced by Viola Film.
