The middle corridor is gaining geopolitical and economic significance.

As Day.Az reports, this was stated by the representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for special assignments Elchin Amirbekov during a panel discussion at the Diplomatic Forum in Antalya.

“Given Azerbaijan’s strategic location, the Middle Corridor, which essentially connects China, Europe and Central Asia, and is also compatible with another Chinese initiative called the Belt and Road, is gaining increasing geopolitical and economic importance,” he said.

Amirbekov noted that last year the EBRD and the European Union recognized that the Middle Corridor is the most sustainable transport corridor connecting Asia with Europe. “With enhanced infrastructure capabilities, streamlined processes and competitive costs, I believe the comparative advantage of the Middle Corridor is clear,” he added.

He also emphasized that Azerbaijan, together with Kazakhstan, Georgia and Turkey, are strengthening coordination within the Middle Corridor. This includes creating a common tariff system, improving transport network management, improving border crossing practices, improving connectivity for users, and achieving better environmental outcomes.

“Thus, countries are currently implementing a roadmap, along with some investment projects. These initiatives are primarily aimed at reducing transaction costs, increasing operational efficiency and increasing private sector participation,” Amirbekov said.
