The statement of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia issued a statement, in which it is said:
“Following the intense discussions about the awarding ceremony of the RA athletes who achieved high sports performance in 2016, which appeared in the public’s attention in recent days, in which in many cases it is rightly equated with the competition of the 10 best athletes held by a non-governmental organization, and being concerned about the various reactions, RA sports and youth issues The Ministry, wanting to reach out to the entire sports-loving public, announces that it will start discussions on the subject with interested organizations, experts and specialists.
The RA Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs will continue to encourage athletes who have achieved high sports performance, according to the RA Government’s decision N 1282 of November 5, 2015. Understanding, however, the imperative of creating an opportunity to evaluate the sports potential of all Armenians and to make all Armenians participate in those processes (to make their voice and opinion heard), the ministry believes that it is no longer necessary to decide the “Best Armenian Sportsman of the Year” nomination by the trinity of Armenia, Artsakh and Diaspora. to the winner (the title-seeker), equally considering as a criterion those worthy children of the Armenian people, who, being the dignified bearers of the Armenian identity, contribute (serve) to the recognition of that identity, to the worthy presentation of our homeland to the world.
This is the vision on which we want to hold discussions with different layers of the public, specialists, experts in the field, with the aim of creating a system in 2017 that is as free as possible from disagreements and misunderstandings for the spread of Armenian identity and recognition of Armenia, popularization of our values.
We fully hope that we will manage to unite all sports-loving Armenians around this idea and the version proposed by us as a preliminary format for its implementation, bring together all opinions.
Given the high public profile of the issue, we expect the cooperation of all interested parties.”
