The United Nations mission in Libya called for the opening of an independent and transparent investigation into the death of political activist Siraj Daghman while he was detained in the Rajma military camp, she said.

The mission explained in a statement today that Daghman was arbitrarily arrested and detained since the beginning of October 2023, along with Fathi Al-Baja, Tariq Al-Bashari, Salem Al-Araibi, and Nasser Al-Daisi.

The mission confirmed that the five detainees were not charged and did not appear before court, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained individuals, including those detained with Daghman.

The Internal Security Service in Benghazi justified the cause of activist Daghman’s death by falling on his head from a high place while trying to escape from the bathroom window by climbing over sewage pipes.

The agency said in a statement about the incident that the family of the deceased received his body after completing all legal procedures, under the supervision of the Public Prosecution, and proving the causes of death.

The agency vowed to pursue all sponsored pages that aim to spread rumors for the purpose of concealing facts and sowing discord for the benefit of their funders.

For its part, the Crime Watch Organization called on the Public Prosecutor to open a comprehensive and independent investigation into the circumstances of Siraj Daghman’s death, which it described as mysterious, to reveal its results, and to hold accountable those responsible for his arbitrary arrest and causing his death.

In its statement regarding the incident, the Crime Monitoring Organization called on the authorities in the east of the country to immediately release his arbitrarily and unconditionally detained comrades.

Local sources confirmed to Libya Al-Ahrar the death of political activist Siraj Daghman, who was detained in the internal security prisons in the city.

Daghman’s relatives posted on social media on Friday the news of his death after spending more than six months in Internal Security prisons.

Sources close to the Daghman family said that Siraj was arrested in October last year by the Internal Security Service along with his two companions, Fathi Al-Bajaa and Tariq Al-Bashari, without any specific charges against them.

According to the intervention of former Interior Minister Ashour Shawayel, the reasons for the arrest of Daghman and his two companions go back to a workshop in which the attendees talked about the Derna Dam collapse incident, organized in Benghazi by the Center for Strategic and Future Studies.

In the same context, the son of the detained political activist in Benghazi, Fathi Al-Baja, said that contact with his father was cut off three months ago, and that there is no information about whether he is alive or not.

Youssef Al-Baja added, in a special statement to Al-Ahrar, that the place of his father’s detention is still unknown, and that the last report of the treating doctor recorded that he suffered from depression, loss of appetite, and weight loss, in addition to kidney and blood sugar disorders, according to what he said.
