The “Morning Stars”, the symbolic family tradition of the Sporting coach at Christmas

They say in the Agaete Town Hall that the “Morning Stars” came out for the first time on December 16, 1959 and since then they have announced the arrival of Christmas Eve by singing Christmas carols through the streets of this municipality of Las Palmas. They began as a citizen initiative that started with a dozen people linked to the parish choir and has been gaining musicians of all ages in recent years. One of the first people to participate was Miguel Ángel Ramírez’s grandmother, who has proudly inherited a tradition in which she participated during the Christmas holidays.

“Agaete is my mother’s town and this tradition is very beautiful. They go out at dawn, at four in the morning, to sing carols around the town. They go through different neighborhoods every day. My grandmother and my aunts started it and now, that they are not with us, it is one of the traditions that I like to relive every time I am there. I am not good for singing, but for listening,” explains Miguel Ángel Ramírez. Agaete was the setting in which they spent Christmas Eve and Christmas with their family, taking advantage of the fact that the first team had a rest until the 29th, the date on which training resumed in Mareo. Agaete is also his special refuge. There he enjoyed a good part of his childhood and usually returns to disconnect or take some distance from football.

Back in Asturias, last Sunday, Miguel Ángel Ramírez enjoyed his first New Year’s Eve in Gijón. The plan began in Mareo. The team trained on the 31st at the red-and-white facilities, after which several players took the opportunity to travel to say goodbye to 2023 with their closest friends. In the case of the coach, there was no need to pack his bags. “Those of us who are here get together, which is the family I have in Gijón, and we try to have the best time possible,” he explains about a celebration shared with the coaching staff. It is common for him to meet with them at their own home at least once a week. This is Christmas in the Sporting coaching staff. Meanwhile, the club is working to strengthen the squad in the January market, with the arrival of a forward as the main priority. While waiting for player exit and entry movements, the team returns to training this morning, starting at 10:30 a.m., in a closed-door session.
