A crisp winter tour leads from the Brandner Innertal to the rushing Kesselfall. To do this, follow the Schattenlagantweg, which leads through the icy beauty of a winter landscape.

The Alvier is a mountain stream that makes its way from the Kesselfall through the town of Brand (1010 meters) to the “Löchern” and finally flows into the Ill after around 13 kilometers. It also flows through the municipality of Bürs. During the post-glacial period, the water dug around 30 meters deep into the solid main dolomite in the upper part of the stream. The constant forces also created two waterfalls and large whirlpools. As it continues down the valley, the Alvierbach has also formed numerous pools in the riverbed in which brown and rainbow trout can be found. The rushing, clear water has drinking water quality. In 2004, the 14-hectare Alvier-Bad was opened in Brand, which is fed entirely by the water of the wild mountain stream. Several thousand aquatic plants ensure that the natural swimming pool is biologically cleaned.Wonderful tour through the winter landscapeIn the winter months you can take a small but nice tour to the Kesselfall. The starting point for this is the Palüdbahn car park at the end of Brand. First, the village street is crossed and past the Sacred Heart Chapel, built in 1914, it goes slightly downwards towards Alvierbach. The route continues over the bridge to the opposite bank of the stream – there the Schattenlagantweg branches off immediately to the right. The winter hiking trail is well-marked, but can be icy in places and leads to the Schattenlagant mountain hut at around 1,480 meters above sea level. For the Kesselfall circuit you don’t have to cover that many meters in altitude, the path branches off beforehand. As the name “Schattenlagant” suggests, the sun’s rays hardly penetrate into this area, the surrounding mountains of the Rätikon rise too powerfully and cover the valley section below in shadows. This is particularly clear on beautiful winter days – then the landscape around the Schattenlagantweg is bathed in bluish light, while the village center of Brand shines in warm sunshine.Type: small winter hikeDuration: a good hourStarting point: Palüdbahn car park, Brand (Innertal)Equipment: winter-proof shoes with good tread soles or snowshoes, warm clothing in layers (a large part of the route is in the shade), possibly sticks. Refreshment options: there are a large number of them in Brand. Public transport: bus line 580, e.g. B. from Bludenz train station to Palüdbahn BrandNote: the Schattenlagantweg may be closed due to increased risk of avalanches, current information about this can be found in the winter report or from Brandnertal Tourismus. An area that was only settled late. Before 1300, only a few shepherds and hunters roamed the forests of the Brandnertal, which For a long time it was considered uninhabitable because of its wildness and location. It was only the Walser, who probably immigrated from Switzerland via the Colrosa pass, that made the area cultivable. The first document about the town dates from 1347 and shows that the Valavier valley was awarded to the Valaisans in return for interest fiefs. Today Brand has 788 inhabitants and is a popular skiing and hiking resort. A touch of the former wilderness can still be glimpsed on the Schattenlagantweg. Even though the area is now well developed, there is still something rough about it – especially in winter: meter-long icicles hang from jagged rock faces, the snow-covered peaks of the Rätikon seem inaccessible, while in the valley the Alvierbach rushes down the valley with rushing force. Be careful in front of slippery, icy places. Accompanied by these impressions, you continue to follow the winter hiking trail to the “Kesselfall” junction. Now turn right over to the stream gorge and onto the bridge that leads over the waterfall (beware of the risk of slipping!). The way back then leads over the so-called Weißtannenmaisäß and further along Schattenlagantstrasse. The latter is closed to traffic in winter, but is used as a toboggan run and can be icy in places.
