Scientists recommend taking seriously the spread of the new variant of COVID-19
Scientists say a common symptom reported by people who develop the new Omicron COVID is a dry cough accompanied by a sore throat. At the same time, this strain also has a rather unusual symptom – night sweats, experts say.
The new strain of coronavirus is spreading much faster than previous variants, although few hospitalizations have been reported so far.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is participating in a concerted effort to understand the Omicron option after it was classified as an “option of concern” by the World Health Organization last month, WalesOnline reported.
In their weekly report on morbidity and mortality, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided a preliminary symptom profile for Omicron.
The report says that coughing is the most common symptom, affecting 89 percent of those infected.
Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention write: “Many of the first reported infections with the Omicron variant were mild, although, as with all variants, there is a delay between infection and more severe outcomes. Symptoms are expected to be milder in vaccinated individuals and those with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection than in unvaccinated individuals. The characteristics of the cases described in this report also cannot be generalized because the results of the investigation may be linked to individual characteristics. ”
The details in the report are based on 43 cases of infections with Omicron strains.
Only seven percent of subjects experienced “asymptomatic” infection or “unknown” symptoms, with 93 percent of cases being considered symptomatic.
“Even if most infections are mild, a highly transmitted option could result in enough cases to overwhelm health systems,” the authors write elsewhere in their report.
The report listed cough (89 percent), fatigue (65 percent), and nasal congestion or runny nose (59 percent) as the three most common symptoms of Omicron.
Shortness of breath (16 percent), diarrhea (11 percent), and loss of taste or smell (eight percent) are all listed at the bottom of the CDC’s list.
At the same time, according to the Mirror, the Omicron variant has one feature that distinguishes it from other strains, since its carriers suffer from night sweats, in which night clothes and bed linen get wet through.
At a briefing hosted by the South African Department of Health, Physician Unben Pillay listed the symptoms reported by Omicron patients, ChronicleLive reported. The doctor said he is also seeing patients with the option of dry cough, fever, fatigue, and “severe body aches.” He suggested that vaccinated people tend to feel “much better.”
