He Palace of Music hosted this Saturday the first of the performances of the Christmas classic ‘The Nutcracker’ by Tchaikovsky. This is the version directed by Rubén Gimeno, which opts for a shorter duration and also less conventional and magical with narration and sand art, elements to achieve the surprise factor among the public. The Vallès Symphony Orchestra is in charge of the musicality of the story of the brave toy soldier and the dubbing actor Luis Posada, of narrating it. But one of the innovations is the participation of the company Borja Ytuquepintas, which illustrates live and with sand everything that happens on stage. The concert will be repeated on December 25 and January 6 and 7.

The musical, narrative and artistic production ‘El Trencanous’ by the Vallès Symphony Orchestra has become a tradition for these holidays at the Palau de la Música. However, as soon as they started the first chords, there was silence in an auditorium with completely sold out tickets.

According to its director, Rubén Gimeno, the work has components that make it very special “the creative and wonderful music”, “Borja making drawings with sand which is very unique” and “Lluis Posada narrating the story”. In addition, he added, “we don’t have ballet, but we have these elements that make it very differentiating”.

He already carries many functions of the play on his shoulders, but Gimeno confesses that “every year you start again”. Therefore, “it is always a challenge”, he said.

According to the narrator of this story, Lluis Posada, the Palau setting is a little different from his usual work space, the dubbing room. “Going out on stage, out of our habit, out of our cage”, he commented. “At the same time, it’s wonderful to have that feeling of how the audience follows what you’re saying. It’s wonderful”, he added.

Posada believes that one of the keys to the success of this version is, precisely, that Nadal has a point of nostalgia and that “narration is to return to the magic of orality, by someone who tells you the story” .

The icing on the cake was the artist Borja González. He has been in charge of illustrating live the story of Clara and her Christmas present, the Nutcracker. The illustrations, however, have not been done with a brush but with sand.

González, from the Borja Ytuquepintas company, has commented that he must be very focused. He explained that each drawing is linked to the musical notes that are playing, “if you do the first one wrong, the third one won’t come out anymore”, he said.

A classic for parties around the world

The Nutcracker is a ballet work by Tchaikovsky that premiered in 1892 at the Teare Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg. The original choreography lasts an hour and a half and is the result of the relationship between Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa.

The story is based on the work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’. A narrative not suitable for all audiences, with elements of horror and psychological terror. It was Alexandre Dumas who revised and sweetened the story to turn it into a fantasy that delights young and old.
